It wasn't particularly cold on the August day we climbed Soulor and Aubisque from Cautaret to LaRuns, but it was pretty foggy near
the top. After the first summit, Col de Soulor, the elevation drops a bit before climbing again to the higher Col d'Aubisque.
Climbing in this direction you get two cols for the price of one. But really everyone just considers this the Col d'Aubisque, another col featured in many iterations of the Tour de France. Typical stark Pyrennes landscape, made a bit eerie by all the fog at the top of the climb, the precipitous drops off the side of the road, and the short, crude tunnel carved out of the rock near the summit. |
