Day 4, August 20, Campbell River to Sayward: The ride north to Sayward was a little bit longer (~45 miles) and hillier but still quite easy. Just north of the paper mill the road turns inland a bit and views of the Straits give way to heavily forested hillsides. Warm weather, light traffic, and very pleasant scenery the whole way and you don't pass another town until you roll into the little hamlet of Sayward, population of just a couple of hundred.

We'd booked a motel in advance in Sayward, the only one I could find on the Internet, Fisherboy Park. And we weren't expecting much from a combination RV park, campground, and motel. But we were pleasantly surprised to find very nice rooms in a beautiful, woodsy setting.

Warm Afternoon on the Salmon River, Sayward
While it's a couple of miles outside the actual town of Sayward, Fisherboy Park had everything we needed. It's a short hike down to the Salmon River where we watched some fellows fly fishing.

About a mile up the road toward town is the Cable House Cafe, an odd structure built out of 2-inch steel cable by some eccentric local. And in the backyard is a "museum" of whimsical outhouses and old cars and trucks being swallowed up by the forest.

A Closer Look at the Cable House

The Cable House Cafe served up a great breakfast complete with their fresh home-baked bread. The waitress and a local patron warned us of the big hill we had to traverse on the way north to Woss. But we've learned not to take these warnings too seriously as non-cyclists just don't seem to know what's possible (and even easy) on a bike. Next
