POSTSCRIPT

  • Bruce was a fabulous host. Not only did he rescue us from the rain in Quincy, but he prepared one of his spectacular dinners (see picture previous page), took us on an extended tour of the Indian Valley/Taylorsville area, and arranged for local reporter Alicia Knadler to interview us for a story in the Plumas County News (see clipping). He also regaled us with stories on the long drive back to Berkeley.

  • I knew John had once lived in Plumas County but I didn't know until I suggested this trip route that he'd actually lived so close to Taylorsville. That's where he began his career as a building contractor with a house he built for his mother in the early '70s. John and Bruce had lots to talk about. Perhaps the biggest coincidence was that they both had purchased their properties (< 5 miles apart) from the very same person.

  • Being unprepared for the rain I still tried to protect my camera as best I could, wrapping it in plastic and putting it at the bottom of my pack. Unfortunately, the bottom of the pack proved to be a little reservoir, collecting a few inches of water that destroyed the camera and even the memory card. Thus we have only the pictures Bruce took of us when we were leaving Berkeley and a few he took in Taylorsville - nothing from the ride itself. I've included a few pictures that I found on the web just to give an idea of some of the beautiful scenery we encountered.

  • This was an odd trip for us: much shorter than usual; a ride on the BART train; literally 100 turns to follow on the Google-generated route from Berkeley to Oroville; a 56-mile day with 9,000 ft. of climbing; chicken-fried steak; unexpected, and unprepared for rain; dinner with John's family in Davis; 30 miles of dirt roads; and a ride back home in Bruce's pickup truck. Where will "anywhere" be in next year's Tour de Anywhere?
